TRAUMA
When the past is still making itself felt.
Trauma doesn’t always look like trauma. Sometimes it looks like overreacting to something small. Shutting down in situations that shouldn’t feel threatening. A persistent sense of not being safe, even when you are. Relationships that keep going wrong in the same ways. The past has a way of making itself felt in the present – not as memory, exactly, but as physical sensation, as emotion, as automatic response. That is not weakness or dysfunction. It is the nervous system doing what it was designed to do, in circumstances where its map is out of date.

How counselling can help
Working with the effects of trauma requires care and patience. It is not about reliving or re-examining every difficult thing that has happened – in fact, for many people that is not necessary or helpful. It is about helping the nervous system understand that the threat is over, and giving the person more choice about how they respond. I draw on Person-Centred Therapy to provide a genuinely safe relational space — because safety is not just a word, it is something that is built, slowly, in the relationship itself. I use CBT to work with the thought patterns and avoidance behaviours that trauma often produces. And I draw on insights from contemporary trauma-informed practice – including the work of Janina Fisher – to understand how trauma is held in the body, not just the mind. I work carefully and at a pace that is right for each person. If at any point the work requires a level of specialist support I am not the right person to provide, I will say so and support you in finding it.
